Sulfonates are essential components in many formulations for metalworking fluids.
Sodium Sulfonates
These compounds combine corrosion protection and emulsifying ability in a single molecule. Typically, corrosion protection improves with increasing molecular weight while emulsifying ability decreases. The lighter sodium sulfonates offer excellent emulsification properties and, due to modern purification processes, have very low salt contents.
Additive-Chemie Luers (ACL) is one of the few manufacturers that produce natural and synthetic sodium sulfonates, built on refined base oils, free from mineral oil, and re-refined base oils.
A broad range of sodium sulfonates, with molecular weights ranging from 420-545 g/mol, is available with varying active contents and formulations. Some heavy sodium sulfonates have been tested as non-hazardous. Besides mineral-oil-containing sulfonates, ACL also produces mineral-oil-free sodium sulfonates on an ester basis and re-refined base oil.
Barium Sulfonates
Both neutral and over-based barium sulfonates are available. Barium sulfonates are typically used in corrosion protection applications and have good demulsifying properties.
Calcium Sulfonates
Calcium sulfonates, offered in various molecular weights and in both neutral and over-based forms, play a crucial role in EP additives and rust inhibitors. They provide excellent corrosion protection, making them indispensable in these applications.
